Thinking about trying CrossFit? It's a great way to get fit, find a community and push yourself. But many CrossFit workouts are built around the snatch and the clean and jerk, two of the most technical movements in sport, often done for reps and against the clock. If nobody has taught you how to lift, that's a tough place to learn.
That's why we recommend a beginner weightlifting class first. A few weeks of focused coaching gives you the positions, timing and confidence to walk into any workout knowing what your body should be doing with a barbell.
What CrossFit asks of your lifts
A typical CrossFit session might combine power cleans, thrusters, overhead squats or snatches with running, rowing or bodyweight movements. The intensity is the point: you move fast, you get tired, and you keep going.
The challenge for beginners is that fatigue exposes any technique you don't yet own. When your legs are burning and the clock is running, the bar drifts away from your body, your back rounds and your elbows get slow in the catch. A coach in a busy group workout can cue you, but they can't rebuild your clean from scratch halfway through a workout.
Olympic lifts reward patience. They are learned best when you're fresh, moving light and getting feedback on every rep.
What a beginner weightlifting class teaches
Our Classic Weightlifting beginner class starts from zero and builds the lifts in layers:
- Positions first. Setup, the hang, the front rack and the overhead lockout, practised with a technique bar or PVC until they feel natural.
- Skill drills. Pulls, high hangs and receiving positions that teach the bar path and the timing of the extension.
- Putting it together. Drills link into the full snatch and clean and jerk, and load goes on only when your movement holds up.
- Accessory strength. Squats, pulls and core work that build the positional strength to stay safe as the weights climb.
You'll hear what to fix and, just as importantly, what you're doing well. We go deeper in What an Olympic Lifting Beginner Class Teaches.
Why technique first keeps you training longer
Learning to lift properly isn't about being cautious for the sake of it. It pays off in three practical ways.
You lift more, sooner. Good technique lets your legs and hips do the work, so you move heavier weights with less effort. Lifters who learn the positions early usually progress faster than those who muscle the bar up.
You look after your body. Many lifting aches in the shoulders, wrists and lower back come from poor positions repeated under fatigue. Owning the front rack and overhead position before adding speed and volume reduces that wear and tear.
You walk in confident. Knowing how a good clean feels means you can scale sensibly, follow a coach's cues and enjoy high-intensity training instead of worrying about every barbell movement.
Pair your lifting with our Strength & Conditioning classes and you'll build the engine and the mechanics to handle any workout.
